PAYSON, Utah — Two people were injured in a shooting in Payson near 500 West Saddlebrook.

Police say it appears one woman shot the other and then turned the gun on herself during a struggle in which police were trying to intervene.

According to Sgt. Noemi Sandoval with Payson Police Department, the two women “seemed to be familiar with each other,” from their initial investigation. A gun was recovered from the scene.

Investigators said the incident began before 2:00 p.m. when a group was inside the house apparently trying to retrieve property. Police have not elaborated on how the dispute started, but it led to one woman being shot in the leg.

The woman shot in the leg, is the one that called police. When officers arrived they heard a man calling for help from the basement.

“He was holding a female…kind of in a bear hug, kneeling on the ground and they asked where the firearm was. She had the firearm in her hand still,” Sandoval said. “One of our officers went to help the male and as he was doing that she was able to maneuver the gun and shoot herself.”

Detectives say the woman shot herself in the head and was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. The other woman was transported in stable condition.

Payson police released the following statement on Facebook,
