Delaware – A promising young life was cut short in a tragic motorcycle accident near Dover, Delaware, as 18-year-old Ethan Statham, a University of Delaware student and Eagle Scout, met an untimely end. The accident occurred on Hazlettville Road, east of Apple Grove Road, at 5:16 p.m. and was confirmed by Delaware State Police.
Ethan Statham, a beloved member of the community, was driving his 2022 Kawasaki EX4 motorcycle eastward when a red 2019 Dodge Ram 1500 traveling in the opposite direction attempted to make a left turn into a private residence’s driveway. Tragically, the Dodge collided with the front tire of Ethan’s motorcycle, ejecting him onto the westbound lane. Despite efforts to save him, Ethan was pronounced dead at the scene.
The 57-year-old driver of the pickup was unharmed in the accident. The incident was first reported on Wednesday, and Ethan’s name was withheld until his family could be notified.
“I have been absolutely devastated since hearing this tragic news. This is my best friend’s brother, and her family has been my second family since I was in 2nd grade. I don’t even have words. Please keep their whole family in your hearts during this time,” Noel Land said. “Emma Statham Satterfield I love you so much. You are handling this with such grace, and you are so strong. In an online obituary, Ethan’s family paid tribute to the remarkable young man, highlighting his love for music, which led him to play the French horn and mellophone. He excelled academically as an honor student at Caesar Rodney High School in Camden and demonstrated a passion for Science and Technology. His involvement in the Technology Student Association (TSA) nurtured his love for photography, leading to victories in state and national competitions.
Ethan also had a deep appreciation for nature and wildlife, often capturing their beauty through his photography. His outdoor adventures, including hiking and camping, naturally led him to join the Scouts. His dedication and perseverance resulted in him becoming one of the youngest to achieve the Eagle rank and later earn the Super Nova Award.
Ethan continued his academic journey at the University of Delaware, where he was majoring in Mechanical Engineering. He was an active member of the University of Delaware Marching Band, playing the mellophone and forming new friendships along the way.
Ethan Statham was known for his loving and selfless nature, always willing to serve and help others. He lived by the values of the Scouting Oath and Law, putting others’ needs before his own. His strong faith was evident through his active participation in various churches and their communities.
Ethan leaves behind a legacy of kindness and humility that touched the lives of many. He is survived by his parents, Kimberley and Michael J. Statham, his sister Emma Statham Satterfield, and a loving extended family. His paternal grandmother, Elaine Statham, preceded him in death.
A visitation is scheduled for Wednesday evening, October 25th, at the Pippin Funeral Home in Wyoming, Delaware. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, October 26th, at the Church of the Holy Cross in Dover, followed by burial at Sharon Hills Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Boy Scout Troop 154 or the Caesar Rodney Band Boosters for a future memorial scholarship fund.
Ethan Statham’s sudden and tragic passing leaves a void in the hearts of those who knew him, and his memory will forever be cherished.
